Fire crews were called to a fire on Durant Road between Maple Bend Road and CrowsFoot Road in Woolwich Monday.
The fire reportedly started just after 12 p.m. and the couple, who is renting, managed to escape safely, however, their two cats are believed to be dead.
Tenants, Don Lee and Beth Ingaldson say they don’t have insurance and that they’ve been struggling the past three years as Beth has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
“It’s very hard because we’ve lost everything, right?” says Beth. “I know that material things are replaceable, but we were very attached to our cats.”
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago. I am being investigated for just about the last year. They think I may have another cancer so I’ve been back and forth to Sunnybrook Hospital, so they’re trying to figure out what’s going on” says Beth. “The chemo and radiation treatment was finished. Then I had surgery and then I started getting sick again. I was refered to Sunnybrook to where I’ve been seeing a specialst where they’re trying to figure out what’s going on. I haven’t been working, so financially we’ve been struggling.”
Fire fighters are expected to remain on scene for several hours.
Fire officials have not said what started the blaze but say they do not believe it’s suspicious at this time.
At this point there’s no damage estimate, but crews say the entire home is a complete loss.
