Today marks St. David’s Day

There are many gearing-up to celebrate St. Patrick’s day later this month, but today another patron saint is being remembered: St. David, the patron saint of Wales.
March 1st marks the feast day of St. David and was chosen in remembrance of his death in the year 569.
The date was declared a national day of celebration in Wales in the 18th century.
While not a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada or the United States, it is a significant day of celebration. The Welsh flag will be flown outside 10 Downing Street throughout today.
The largest of the parades is held in Cardiff and is formally attended by either the British Monarch or the Prince of Wales.
The Daily Post also reports that this year a world record attempt to make the biggest Welsh cake will also take place in a community called Bala in Gwynedd, Wales.
Many Canadians can trace their origins back to Wales. The 2001 census showed that Alberta had the highest number of people of Welsh descent with approximately 60,000.
