The Manulife Financial LPGA Classic heads into its 3rd year at Grey Silo in Waterloo in June and is considered by many one of the most successful stops on the professional womens’ golf tour.
A report this morning however suggests the chief sponsor may be considering moving it to another local golf course or out of the region altogether.
The Record quotes the president of Sports Properties International, Hugh Morrow, as saying Manulife Financial has “asked us to look at other venues within the region and outside the region.”
He goes on to say, “They believe that there’s an opportunity for them to take this event to other areas where they have large employee bases.”
Morrow’s comments were reportedly made during a recent meeting with regional councillors.
Whistle Bear and Westmount have been mentioned as potential local options.
Manulife Financial has not commented on the report.
Manulife’s sponsorship agreement is for three years and this marks the final year of that deal although there is an option to extend the agreement.
Morrow says we could know more about the future of the tournament in May when an announcement is expected.
