Regional Police Officer fired after leaking info

An 11 year member of the Regional Police Service will be fired after leaking private information to a citizen.

The case surrounding 37-year-old Constable Craig Markham has been ongoing for the past three years and ended with charges and termination of employment.

Police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel tells 570 News this was a difficult decision.

“The trust of the community is foremost for our service and the public needs to know that they can trust the members of their police service with information…it’s certainly nothing to celebrate…no organization is perfect and when a situation does occur, we have a process to deal with in a very open and transparent way.”

Markham is the second officer to be fired in the past two months; something Heinzel says is very rare.

He says the number of officers fired is “still very small in number relative to number of members working [for the WRPS]. We have almost a thousand members who are very proud to serve our community. We work very hard every day to earn the trust and confidence of the community.”

At this time, Markham was given seven days to quit or face termination. His lawyer has said Markham will not quit and the decision will be appealed to the Ontario Civilian Police Commission in Toronto.
