Regional Police have been searching for a 5-year-old boy in New Hamburg, after the boy was reported missing yesterday afternoon at 4:40 p.m.
Police, along with Wilmot, Kitchener, and Cambridge Fire Departments, searched an area in the Nith River where it appeared someone had fallen through the ice.
Kitchener Fire Department members entered the ice to try and find the boy, but were unsuccessful, and the search was called off at 10 p.m due to safety concerns.
Sgt. Dave Reibel says crews returned this morning at 9:30 a.m. with fire department members from Wilmot and Cambridge, looking in and along the river for the boy as part of a “recovery operation.”
Reibel says police appreciate the support and willingness to help, but warn the river is too dangerous and asks everyone to stay away.
He also cautions anyone near any body of water at this time of year, as the thickness of the ice can vary especially in areas of moving water.
