Worker rescued from crane during fire in Kingston

Some residents of Kingston spent the night out of their homes following a massive fire in an apartment building under construction.

Even though firefighters had the blaze under control by last evening, they were still battling some hot spots late into the night.

One major concern is the stability of a construction crane towering above the charred work site.

The crane was the scene of a dramatic rescue yesterday afternoon when the operator was rescued by a military helicopter after being stranded by the fire.

Police say the crane operator — who awaited rescue at the tip of the long horizontal arm — suffered only minor injuries.

John Ashie was working at his family’s car dealership nearby and says the operator had to get out of the little booth he was in and walk across the entire length of the crane.

At one point, the fire was so intense, billboards across the street were catching fire.

Police advised evacuees to spend the night with family or at an evacuation centre.
