Cambridge hiking water rates

Cambridge residents are facing a hike in their water rates.

Cambridge City Council voted in favour of an increase of 5.3 per cent, meaning an extra $4 a month for the average homeowner.

Mayor Doug Craig says the new billing rate is required to meet provincial legislation.

He says within the next decade they are required to come up with a sustainable system and the water rates reflect the city following that legislation.

He says putting off the increase could lead to further hardships if the economy continues to stall.

Craig says this is typical with what is happening all over the province.

The new rates are effective January 1st.
