Today is Cyber Monday across North America, the ninth straight year that retailers have followed up Black Friday by encouraging consumers to shop online.
eBay Canada’s manager of retailer strategy, Kevin Wolfley, told 570’s Business to Business show that e-commerce in Canada has grown year after year. “We’ve been a few years behind where the U.S. and the U.K. have been, but Canadians spend well over a billion dollars on E-bay each year and 2013 looks like it’s going to be one of our better years.”
Wolfley says a previously hot online seller has made a comeback. “Gaming is actually starting to re-emerge this year as one of the hot items. We haven’t had a lot of new releases in the gaming industry until this year. You’ve got the new PlayStation, you’ve got the Xbox One – both of those are really hot items.”
Wolfley says that in the toy category, Furbys are big sellers online. He calls the Furby the “Beanie Baby of 2013.”
He also says small and medium-sized businesses need an online presence. “Find a platform that is going to work for your business, that’s going to help you manage your inventory and get online, and then make sure the platform also has plug-ins available that will expand your traffic onto other platforms.”
