Waterloo Region Helps After Typhoon in Philippines

Officials post death toll of nearly 4,000 in the city of Tacloban alone, with the UN confirming some of the worst-hit areas have received no aid after a deadly typhoon hit the central Philippines.

Disaster Management Coordinator for the Red Cross Waterloo Region – Lynn Kergan tells 570 News although frustration is at a slow pace, there have been 374 donations directly made to the Waterloo branch.

“We have collected almost $50,000 – that’s not including donations via text or through our website.”

Kergan adds twelve Canadians have been deployed in total, along with one local volunteer from the Goderich area. She says they are providing critical life saving services to the areas that have been affected the most by the typhoon.
