Toronto’s deputy mayor is asking his fellow city councillors to give Mayor Rob Ford a chance to redeem himself after months of turmoil over an alleged crack video.
Norm Kelly says Ford’s apology yesterday for past indiscretions and his promises to make changes in his personal life addressed some of the concerns council members have raised.
Kelly took those concerns to Ford when the two met on Saturday.
Yesterday on his weekly radio show Ford said that he was sorry for getting drunk in public on two occasions and for texting while driving.
But he insisted he is neither an alcoholic nor a drug addict and said he has no intention of resigning or taking a leave of absence, as many people have demanded.
As for the alleged video that appears to show him smoking crack cocaine, Ford said he hasn’t seen it, but he urged Police Chief Bill Blair to release it to the public so he could address its contents.
Police, however, say only the courts can do that.
