The City of Waterloo has approved a major upgrade at its Colonial sanitary pumping station.
The upgrade is expected to cost $7.58 million and will include the replacement of the mechanical, electrical and process equipment. Construction starts in the spring and should be completed before 2014 is out. It was originally slated as a two year project.
The city has applied for a provincial grant of $1.6 million to cover the cost of the project. They will likely find out if they are approved in late March. If not, development charges and sanitary reserves will be tapped into.
“Certainly the infrastructure is aging…there is a portion of growth on the east side of Waterloo. We’re also looking at additional safeguards, upgrading the system to provide additional emergency storage.” said Denise McGoldrick, Director of Water Services with the City of Waterloo.
