Redevelopment set to move ahead at Kitchener Frame property

Another hurdle has been cleared in efforts to redevelop the former Kitchener Frame property in Kitchener.

The news means the land at Homer Watson and Bleams Road is expected to receive a major facelift.

A ruling by the Ontario Municipal Board paved the way for the redevelopment.
It has ruled in favour of the proposed agreement between the City of Kitchener, the Region and the owner of the property, which is also known as the former Budd plant property.

Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr calls it “good news.”

He adds, “the retail and office development plans will enhance the site. But what is really important is that we’ve protected valuable industrial land and the city retains much-needed sportsfields. It is a win-win.”

The site takes up 122 acres, but 40 acres of that will remain in city hands for future industrial development.

The land was purchased by a group of local business people in 2010, and they’ve been waiting since then for zoning changes and eventually a positive ruling from the OMB.

The property could eventually include everything from offices and retailers to daycare facilities.

Construction could begin late this coming spring.
