All-clear given at Prime Minister’s office; evacuated after suspicious package

OTTAWA – An evacuation and bomb scare at the building that houses the Prime Minister’s office caused road closures and a large police response, Wednesday afternoon.

The Langevin Building was evacuated shortly before noon, after a man walked into the building and claimed to have a bomb.

RCMP say the Prime Minister was not in the building at the time.

A man could be seen in the back of a police car, and Ottawa Police confirmed that a “person of interest” was in custody.

There’s no word what charges could be laid against the man in custody, if any.

Ottawa Police sent in its explosives robot to examine the package, and later determined the package was not dangerous.

During the police operation, sections of Wellington and Metcalfe streets were closed. Once the all-clear was given, police tape was taken down around the Langevin Building and all streets in the area that were closed have been re-opened.

The evacuation came just hours before the Governor General was set to read the speech from the throne, in the Senate.
