It was a rough start to the game Friday night at the Aud with a much improved Erie Otters team in town. Erie jumped off to a quick start when forward Andre Burakovsky took a pass from Connor McDavid and snapped a shot past Tyson Teichmann at 8:09 of the 1st period for his 5th goal of the year. Connor McDavid then dished another pass to Dane Fox who snapped his 6th goal of the year past Teichmann at 16:45. The Otters lead 2-0 at the end of the first.
The Otters started the second period on a power play after Max Iafrate was called for an illegal equipment penalty late in the first period. Connor McDavid broke down the wing and potted in his first of the game at 32 seconds into the period. The Rangers fell into some penalty trouble when rookie forward Mike Davies took a 5 minute major penalty for slew footing. The league will review the play and Davies will miss games. The Rangers then managed to sustain a bit of pressure late in the period and Radek Faksa was robbed by Oscar Dansk on a glorious opportunity in front of the net late in the frame. The teams went into the locker rooms with the Otters leading 3-0 at the end of two periods of play.
The Rangers fell into more penalty trouble in the 3rd period. Faksa and Iafrate both went off for roughing at the same time. On a two man advantage, Burakovsky scored his second of the night as he danced around Teichmann. The rough play picked up again late in the period and with less than five minutes to play; Max Iafrate received penalties for instigating, fighting and game misconduct and will also miss games.
With the loss the Rangers fall to 3-3 on the seasons, the Otters improve to 5-2-1.
Forward Eric Ming was the odd OA to sit out.
The Rangers are in Plymouth Saturday night to take on the Whalers who are coming off a loss to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Game time is 7pm; Don Cameron and Mike Farwell are on the air with the pre-game show at 6:30pm.
