Waterloo creating more cemetery space at Parkview

Waterloo’s Bechtel Park is now two soccer fields short.

Council unanimously voted to remove the two sport fields to allow for more cemetery space as Parkview Cemetery gets closer to capacity.

Councillor Mark Whaley says even though the land was needed for cemetery use, they didn’t want to make the city short on playing space so RIM park is now home to two additional soccer fields and two more are being built on Westmount Road in the west end of the city.

Whaley says Bechtel Park was always meant to be a cemetery park and as time goes on more fields will be used for burial plots and other cemetery needs.

The new space will allow different faiths to occupy different areas of the land and Whaley says the cemetery will be able to accommodate any special burial or service requirements.
