Waterloo-based company scores big with NHL

The National Hockey League has introduced a number of changes to NHL goals this season and once they were approved, the league needed to find a company to build them all.

Enter Athletica Sports Systems of Waterloo, who were chosen to make all the newly redesigned hockey goals for every NHL rink this season.

It’s a big deal and as the company’s Director of Sales and Marketing David Staines tells 570 News it was a big order too, “Well there are 30 teams in the league, each team took at least two pairs, so at least four goals and some teams took as many as four pairs in order to accommodate their practice facilities as well.”

Staines adds this didn’t happen overnight, “It’s something that’s been a few months in the making. Our company started to make hockey goals as an add on to the hockey boards we’ve already been making, so we started talks with the NHL in the summer and they gave us the contract.”

The goal frame design changes introduced prior to the start of the 2013-14 season by the NHL are related to improving the ability of officials, both on-ice and in the video review booth, to see the puck at all angles.
