Groceries were cheaper as was a ticket to the movies and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” was at the top of the charts.
The year was 1993 and it was when Kitchener’s current city hall opened for business.
Council moved into their new chambers in August of ’93 with the grand opening on September 18th.
Mayor Carl Zehr took a trip down memory lane during last night’s council meeting to mark the 20th anniversary.
He said council discussed planning issues that would never be allowed today including removing the sprinkler system from the third floor tower.
Zehr says looking back most people will consider this a good investment, creating jobs during a recession and becoming the focal point of many community events.
He said the winner of the architectural competition in the late ’80’s was Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects of Toronto.
The building was the first major project for the firm and it helped launch their career including going on to design the Canadian Embassy in Berlin.
