The Ontario legislature’s fall session begins today, with the Liberals promising lower car insurance rates, a new spending watchdog and a ban on teens using tanning beds.
The minority government made a deal with the NDP to get its budget passed, agreeing to mandate a 15 per cent cut in auto insurance premiums and appoint a financial accountability officer. A bill on the spending watchdog will be introduced today.
Premier Kathleen Wynne says she wants to work with the opposition parties, but Progressive Conservative house leader Jim Wilson predicts the Liberals will trigger an election this fall.
He says Wynne will say she wants to seek her own mandate from voters, and claim the opposition is delaying the passage of most bills and paralyzing the legislature.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says her party will make sure the Liberals keep their promises, and will vote with the government to quickly implement a ban on young people using tanning beds.
The Tories have served notice they will put forth a second contempt motion today related to the Liberals’ decisions to cancel gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga, at a cost of at least $585 million.
