CUPE calling for more transparency on region’s rapid transit plan

The region is being urged to be more transparent when it comes to a public-private partnership for rapid transit.
The call comes from Toby Sanger, a senior economist with the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
He tells The Record, “There is a real problem in terms of accountability.”
He’s concerned unless all the facts are on the table, the cost of the $818-million project could balloon.
Regional Councillor Jim Wideman disagrees, telling the paper council has released all the information it can at this time, adding anything that has been kept private is because it’s not theirs to release.
The public-private partnership will see a consortium of companies design, build, finance, operate and maintain the light rail transit system.
