First-ever local bike share program now available

Waterloo Region is now home to a community bike share program, offering the use of easy-to-ride bicycles for a seasonal fee of 30 dollars.
Co-ordinator Adrian Underhill tells 570 News that members of the program, run by The Working Centre in Kitchener, will have access to individual keys at three bike share stations. “That key will have a number on it and the number corresponds to the bike which is outside, so each one has a clearly displayed number on it and you unlock that bike and you’re away to ride.”
The stations are located at the Charles Street bus terminal, the Region of Waterloo building on Frederick Street and the Sun Life Financial building on Union Boulevard.
Underhill says the program can complement other forms of transportation. “There’s a lot of opportunities for it to integrate with a bus trip or with commuting by car or if you already own your own bike, there’s lots of ways that it can fit in to be one piece of the puzzle.”
Underhill adds bike share members will have access to a fleet of user-friendly bicycles. “It’s a step-through frame, which means that you don’t have to lift your legs super high up to get on to it. It’s got an adjustable seat, it’s got a bell, it has a nice basket.”
The current membership season concludes in November. To register, sign up at The Working Centre website or in person at their facility of Queen Street South.
