The first heat wave of the summer has arrived and has taken hold in most of the southern and eastern parts of the province.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of the area — warning of hot and humid air and temperatures in the low 30s today.
There’s a humidex advisory in effect and temperatures are expected to touch 40 in many areas, including Toronto, where officials have upgraded a heat alert to an extreme heat alert.
During an extreme heat alert, people are encouraged to check on vulnerable adults and children to make sure they are keeping cool and drinking plenty of fluids.
Peter Ellis with Waterloo Public Health tells 570 News drinking plenty of cool liquids is just one thing you can do to keep yourself cool.
“Seek shade, avoid sun exposure, where loose fitting and light coloured clothing, and when you are working out side make sure you are taking plenty of breaks.”
Ellis also adds that going to your vet to find out how your pets can stay cool is also recommended when temperatures climb past 30 degrees.
Environment Canada expects things to start cooling off around mid-week.
