Police Open House

Police Week kicks off today with both Waterloo Regional and Guelph Police hosting open houses.
The Regional Police event happens at police headquarters at 200 Maple Grove Road from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Spokesperson Alana Holtom tells 570’s Jeff Allan Show there’s so much to see and do.
“The horses will be there, we also have canine demonstrations. New this year we have a tumble bus for the little ones, it’s kind of a play spot for the little ones to jump around. We have live entertainment, face painting, it’s really really fun.”
Holtom adds the best part is the event is free, but says a donation for the food bank is welcome.
One of the more popular displays is the emergency response unit.
“Basically, they are, for those of you who don’t know, the branch that responds to the higher risk calls. They have all that equipment on, they’re in the black uniform. They set up a display with all of their equipment, you can check it out and ask questions. They’re there to respond. They’ll also have their bomb dismantling machine there.”
Holtom says they are hoping for nice weather today as well, because there are many things to do indoors and outdoors.
There will also be pony rides, food and refreshments, as well as live music performed by regional officers.
There will also be some haircuts as part of COPS FOR CANCER.
“We have volunteers within the police service, a lot of them do it every year, to raise money in support of the Grand River Cancer Centre. They get their heads shaved at the event. So you can see police officers all lined up getting their head shaved at the event. So you can see police officers all lined up getting their head shaved, just right out in the middle of the event.”
Holtom adds all of the police branches will have displays set up and are ready to answer your questions. She says it’s a great opportunity not only for family fun, but for anyone interested in a policing career.
In Guelph, the open house runs from 10 until 3 at police headquarters on Wyndham Street South.
Activities there include demonstrations and interactive displays from the traffic, tactical, communications, canine, school safety and V.I.P. units.
