Ontario eco-fees go up today

As today, Ontario residents will be paying a little bit more to buy new electronics. Ontario’s eco-fee is on the rise to cover the costs of creating the latest and greatest electronics and gadgets.

Eco-fees were introduced back in 2003 by the Electronics Product Stewardship Program, and are a reimbursement to the manufacturer that created the product.

The costs can range from pennies to double digit dollar amounts, and is used to divert electronic waste from landfills. The products are then stripped down to their raw materials for recycling and reintegration.
