You may have to get used to sorting banana peels and apple cores. Waterloo Regional Council is talking about making green bins mandatory.
This October, The Region will have to pay the City of Guelph $2.3 million per year to process it’s organic waste. The ten year contract is based on 20,000 tonnes of organic waste collected per year. The Record is reporting that The Region is only coming up with half of that.
Even though the compost quota doesn’t reach the 20, 000 tonne mark, The Region still gets the same bill. This breaks down to $230 dollars per tonne of organic waste.
Compared with The York Region, this is $100 more per tonne.
Director of Waste Management, Jon Arsenault tells The Record that “There’s not a lot of appetite to participate (in the program) because (residents) don’t have to”
Regional Chair Ken Seiling said they’ve taken the “soft approach” and “need to go back and look at all the possibilities.”
Regional Council will hear an update on the green bin program and the ongoing waste management master plan from Waste Management staff in the coming weeks.
