Kitchener proposes change for school zones

Drivers may soon be forced to slow down in school zones if they don’t already.

Kitchener may be implementing 40 km/ hour traffic safety zones around schools in order to prevent and protect children from excessive traffic and speeding.

The pilot program would last one year and would implemented at up to ten schools in the city.

Councillor Bill Ioannidis tells 570 News the goal is to increase driver awareness.

“Hopefully this will send a positive message to the community in that you need to be aware of where children are and where they are in school and that you need to slow down.”

The new speed limit around schools would be in effect 24/7.

Ioannidis adds if the project goes well, in a year, it would expand to schools city wide, but for now he’s just happy for a start.

“I’m very glad to see we’re implementing this program. I think the public in general is .. the needs and concerns of everyone on the road, with cycling, with pedestrians, with anyone else who uses the roads, we need to be aware of our surroundings and this is just another vantage point of projecting that message. You need to be aware of your surrounding when you’re driving.”

Council still has to give their approval on Monday.
