WRPS budget in the red by $1.7M

Waterloo Regional Police ended last year with a deficit of $1.7 million which is a record high for the service.

Overtime pay is the main reason for the record high deficit.

Police Services Board President Tom Galloway tells 570’s Jeff Allen Show that unforeseen investigations and an arbitrated wage settlement for police were also factors.

Meantime, Regional Police Chief Matt Torigian tells 570’s Jeff Allen Show that you can’t predict where you are going to need overtime hours and how often, especially when working on a homicide case.

Torigian adds that between 85 and 88 per cent of last year’s budget went to paying wages and benefits.

The Police Service Board will take into account overtime hours in future budgets to help get it back into the black.

A report will be put before the Police Services Board on Wednesday.
