New pope described as a “simple man”

The name Jorge Bergoglio may have been a surprise, but the local Catholic community says he is a man who can connect with the people.

Reverend Monsignor Murray Kroetsch, Chancellor of the Diocese of Hamilton (which includes Waterloo Region), tells 570’s Jeff Allen Show his initial impression is of a humble man.

He noted the Pope’s prayers from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica were those that all Catholics could join in on — such as the ‘Our Father’ and the ‘Hail Mary.’

Myroslaw Tataryn, a professor of religous studies at St.Jerome’s University, adds the new pope is a simple man, which appeals to a lot of followers.

“He takes public transport, he cooks his own meals . . . he’s apparently very personable.”

Father Joseph Diviveros of St. Francis of Assasi parish in Kitchener tells 570 News it’s “remarkable” the Pope chose the name Francis.

“There’s never been a Francis, so I think it signals the beginning of something new.”

Diviveros adds, “Francis [of Assisi] had a profound love for the poor and for creation.”

He hopes the new pontiff will keep the church on a path that is dedicated to helping others.
