Two days left, gentlemen

Flowers stores in the region are busy this week preparing for Valentines
Day.

You would think most people would pre-order their flowers, but Linda Nelson, owner of Cameron’s Flowers in Kitchener tells 570 News “Everything is last minute, there is a few [that order] ahead, but very few.”

Donna Swinson, co-owner of Lilies Whites in Kitchener agrees.

“We do get a lot of pre-orders… but there are also lots of people that phone the day before and the day of. We try to look after everybody that we can, it’s a very busy time, very high volume of deliveries that go out all day long even in to the evening. We also have a lot of people picking up flowers as well.”

Swinson says it’s a good idea to try and order your flowers ahead of time to make sure you get what you want, especially if you’re looking for something specific or special.

Both owners say placing your order three days before Valentine’s Day is usually enough time to secure the flowers you want. But even if you wait, they say they are stocked up and ready for people running in at the last minute.

If you’re not sure what kind of flowers to get that special someone, Nelson tells 570 News “The red rose is number one [on Valentine’s Day].”

And in case you didn’t know, Nelson says each rose colour has a meaning.

“Red is love, white is purity and humility, orange is desire, pink is grace and gentility and yellow means friendship.”

If you’re in a new relationship,  Nelson suggests a simple red rose.

For those who have long term partners, Swinson recommends a customized vase arrangement.

And believe it or not, men like flowers too! Both stores say it’s not as common, but women do order flowers for their men. Swinson says a good choice is bolder coloured flowers with richer tones or some exotic flowers with larger blooms. Nelson suggests some birds of paradise.

To make sure you flowers last, be sure to mix in the attached plant food, trim the ends of the stems and change the water often.
