Goodbye Penny

Today marks another step towards a penniless Canada.
As of today, the Royal Canadian Mint will no longer be distributing the one-cent coins, and instead will begin to collect them from financial institutions.
As the pennies come in, they will be melted down to harvest their copper and zinc for recycling.
Also beginning today, many businesses will be rounding their after tax cash transactions up or down to the nearest nickel.
According to the Royal Canadian Mint website, the penny is still legal tender and can be used but only at businesses that choose to accept them.
Internet search-engine giant Google is marking the day last day of the penny with a shiny, spinning, 2013 penny as one of it’s letters on it’s Canadian homepage.
