Investigation continues after a fire in Waterloo

Two children remain in hospital after an apartment fire in Waterloo.
Waterloo Fire Rescue responded to the fire around 10 o’clock Saturday night on Bridgeport Road East.
The fire was venting through the roof of the four-storey apartment complex when firefighters arrived.
The heat and heavy flames were blocking firefighters’ access to the building, and a family was trapped inside.
The parents threw their two children down to firefighters in order to save them.
Waterloo Fire Rescue says one child is in critical condition at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, while the other sustained non-life threatening injuries, and is at Grand River Hospital.
Firefighters used ground ladders to get the parents out unharmed.
One firefighter was taken to hospital with a severe cut on his arm, but has been released.
The Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the fire — and there is no damage estimate at this time.
The city’s Building Department must deem the building safe before the investigation can begin.
The tenants have all been moved out of the building for the time being, and the Canadian Red Cross will return today to help with temporary shelter.
