GM wants to get CAMI talks going sooner

General Motors has reportedly asked the CAW to reopen its contract with CAMI workers in Ingersoll seven months early.
The Globe and Mail reports the move is aimed at getting its labour cost projections clarified early so GM can decide whether or not to keep production of the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain in that community.
The automaker’s Canadian president has made no secret about his concerns with Canadian labour costs when compared to those in other countries.
The paper quotes industry insiders as saying GM has all but decided to continue producing the vehicles there, even though there had been suggestions it may be moved elsewhere.
The current contract expires in September, but General Motors wants to move that up to this March.
About 3,000 people work at the Ingersoll plant.
