All Waterloo Region District School Board elementary schools will be open today.
The announcement was made just before 5am.
The Upper Grand District School Board and Avon Maitland District School Board
have also announced their schools are open.
It comes after the Ontario Labour Relations Board ruled a walkout planned for today would be illegal.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario announced shortly after the ruling the teachers would not participate in the protest.
EFTO president Sam Hammond said the union respects the decision.
The OLRB decision came just a few hours before thousands of educators were due to stage a one-day walkout in protest of the governing Liberals’ decision to impose two-year contracts under Bill 115.
But the ruling, reached after a marathon 12-hour hearing that stretched into the wee hours of the morning, may have come too late to have much effect. At least eight school boards, including Ottawa and Toronto, have decided to close their schools in anticipation of the protest, according to the ETFO.
