Leafs Fire Burke

President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs Brian Burke has been fired this afternoon and the team has appointed assistant G-M Dave Nonis as the new General Manager.

In a news conference today, the NHL team said they wanted a change in leadership.

The news comes just days before the shortened season is about to begin.

Nonis was Burke’s second in command in Toronto and the two had a long working history together after they both left the Vancouver Canucks to join the Leafs.

Burke held the Leafs job for just over four years and the team has missed the playoffs in every season under his watch.

The Leafs are coming off a disappointing 13th-place finish in the Eastern Conference.
