Housing starts up in December

Housing starts in Waterloo Region were up in December as compared to the same month the previous year.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reports, work began on 278 homes last month, up from 105 in December 2011.
Apartment starts get the credit for the upswing.
They totaled 178, up from just 8 in December 2011.
Starts on single-detached homes declined to 52 units from 87 while townhome starts were up modestly.
For the entire year, housing starts were down from 2011.
CMHC says that was almost entirely due to a slowdown in single-detached housing starts.
