Teachers in Stratford to strike Monday

The Avon Maitland District School Board will join a Timmins area school board in starting rotating strikes on Monday.

The rotating strikes will be taking place at public elementary schools.

Director of Education with the Avon Maitland District School Board, Ted Doherty tells 570 News schools will be closed for all junior kindergarten to grade 8 students.

The information is on their website, as well, a letter was sent home with students on Thursday.

Doherty says they’re disappointed it has come to this, “Obviously we don’t like to see disruptions to delivery of programs in our schools, having said that, the union has made it very clear it’s a protest against the government and Bill 115, not against the board. They are in a legal strike position and are choosing to exercise that.”

He adds they met with the elementary teachers leadership about what their plans are for Monday and says teachers will be picketing at particular sites, “The education here in Seaforth, they’re picketing our MPP offices. They’re also going to be picketing our 7-12 schools and we have 6 of those, and one elementary school, Listowel Central.”

Education Minister Laurel Broten has given the green light for these one day protests, but says the government is prepared to act if the walkouts go beyond one day the legal documents have already been drawn up to end them.
