High school teachers may begin “strike action” in Waterloo Region

Some local teachers will be starting “selective” strike action in Waterloo Region.
High school teachers at public schools in the region will begin what they’re calling a “selective” strike tomorrow morning. President of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation in Waterloo Region, Rob Gascho, tells 570 News it’s a withdrawal of certain services that teachers provide, like staff meetings and possibly not administering the Ministry of Education’s standardized testing.
Gascho says they won’t be walking of the job or having picket lines set up outside the schools. He says lessons will still be taught, grades given out and extra-curricular activities will still be offered, however they wont be communicating with parents outside of school day hours.
Gascho says his union is not telling teachers to stop offering extra-curricular activities.
Ontario teachers have been battling the provincial government over a legislated 2-year wage freeze. Back in september the local teacher’s union held a strike vote that resulted in 93% support of a strike in Waterloo Region. Gascho says hopefully this job action means a new deal can be reached sooner rather than later.
