Standardized test results are in for school boards across the province for the 2011-2012 school year. In Waterloo Region, the two boards are both showing a need to improve in mathematics, while literacy scores show improvement.
Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) testing focuses on students in grades 3, 6, and 9.

Maria Ivankovic, WCDSB Superintendent of Learning told 570 News how these results have been supported, “we’re doing networking sessions with teachers, it’s all about teacher embedded professional learning and putting supports in place. We have literacy/numeracy teachers that go around to the schools and work with the teachers.” Going forward, Ivankovic said, the focus will shift, “this year the focus will be not so much on literacy/numeracy teacher networks, but rather a focus on math, with a real targeted focus on the content.”
Results for the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) in Mathematics:
-Grade 9 applied math results went up 3% from 2010/2011.
-Grade 9 academic math results show a high success rate with 84% of students meeting provincial standard.
Spokesperson for the public board, Elaine Ranney told 570 News the math testing results for Grade 3 and 6 students don’t show the same upward trend as demonstrated with Grade 9 students. “Math is an area that we need to continue to focus our efforts on in order to see similar gains.”
Results for the WRDSB in Literacy:
Ranney tells 570 News Grade 3 and 6 students in the public board scored increases in writing over the 2010/2011 year, “Grade 3 and 6 students maintained gains in reading, and showed improvement in writing, increasing by 1% from last year.”
-Grade 6 reading results over the last 5 years have improved 11%;
-Grade 6 writing results over the last 5 years have improved 9%.
