There has been no shortage of talk about the impact on society of the baby boom generation moving into their retirement years.
That is part of the focus of a conference, underway at the Waterloo Inn and hosted by the University of Waterloo.
The Longevity 8 conference has never before been held in Canada and this one is focusing on the aging population and the effect it will have on employers when it comes to securing pensions and insurance for their employees.
Sun Life Financial’s Brent Simmons is the Senior Managing Director of Defined Benefits Solutions and tells 570 News, Canadians are, on average, living about 4 years longer when compared to 40 years ago.
He says, for employers with a defined benefit pension plan, that could mean an additional cost of 10 to 15% since that plan promises to pay out for the life of the employee.
The conference, which wraps up today, has brought together close to a dozen speakers, who will talk about some of the things employers can do to lower the risks.
More than 160 people are attending.
