While the unemployment rate in Waterloo Region was up slightly last month, it continues to outshine the national and provincial averages.
The jobless rate locally stands at 6.9% in June, up from 6.8% the previous month.
Vincent Ferrao, of Statistics Canada, tells 570 News, there were job losses across a number of sectors in the Region last month. “The reason being why employment fell is that we have fewer people working in construction, fewer people in educational services, information, culture and recreation”, says Ferrao.
Overall for the year thus far, however, Ferrao says the jobs picture is a positive one. “So far this year, employment in Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, has increased by 8,000 and to put into perspective, that’s in increase of nearly 3 per cent”, he adds.
Ferrao says there was a net loss of 2,900 jobs in Waterloo Region last month.
