Local Doctors React to OHIP Fee Cuts

A dispute between the McGuinty government and Ontario’s doctors hits close to home.

The Cambridge Medical Specialists Group will appear before city council tonight to provide an update on what it’s doing to try and convince the government to rescind what it calls arbitrary and punitive fee cuts for services provided by medical specialists.

The group warns the cuts will lead to a reduction, if not the elimination, of many specialist services in Cambridge as well as other parts of the province.

Dr. Shekhar Pandey tells 570 News one of the biggest concerns is the ability to access services and diagnostic testing will be “dramatically diminished.”

He calls the cuts “draconian” and says similar cuts by the former Bob Rae government in the 1990s resulted in a significant loss of resources in the city including the departure of two cardiologists in three or four years.

The fee changes are due to take effect July 1st.
