Open Streets

They were called Car Free Sundays last summer in Waterloo.

They are back, but with a change of name.

Today is the first of four Open Streets days this summer, being held on King Street, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The event features impromptu parks, art alleys, sports demonstrations, community information booths and Uptown Waterloo businesses and eateries.

Open Streets is now run by a community board, not the city.

It has been funded by the city, the downtown business association, and various sponsors.

King Street will be closed between Union and Erb during the event.

Steve Krysak, who heads up marketing and PR for Open Streets UpTown Waterloo, tells 570’s Jeff Allan Show, “We were working on some pretty intense plans to communicate all the closures that are going to happen very early and make sure all the parking is very accessible.”

He adds, “We have GRT going right there … you have the Iron Horse trail going right next to it.”

The next three Sundays hosting Open Streets this summer are July 22, August 12 and September 16.
