Last chance for a rain barrel

It’s the end of an era for Waterloo Region. It’s staging its spring spring rain barrel distribution today – the final one ever.

Since the program’s inception in 2001, 43,000 rain barrels have been distributed. The idea is to allow residents to capture rain water which they can then use to water their gardens, plants and lawns.

The Region’s Water Efficiency Manager, Steve Gombos, says “The program has been enormously successful at putting water conservation on the map in Waterloo Region.”

Still, he says, “All good things must come to an end, so we’re giving residents one last chance to purchase a barrel before the program ends.”

Today’s event is on a first come, first served basis.

The barrels will be distributed starting at 7:30 this morning in the parking lots of Conestoga Mall, Fairview Park Mall and Cambridge Centre. Once they run out, it’s over.

The barrels sell for $40 each  and there is a limit of one barrel per person, per household.
