About 100 CAW protesters picketed Bay Street, Toronto today.
Demanding 36 laid-off workers at the Snowbear plant in Guelph get their severance pay.
Snowbear makes utility trailers and snowplows and stopped production at its plant in Guelph last fall.
The Canadian Auto Workers union says they haven’t been assured the workers will get the almost $500,000 they’re owed.
CAW Assistant to the President Jerry Dias told 570 News the factory is controlled by Catalyst Capital Investments and it’s founding partner, Newton Glassman.
Dias said “Catalyst Capital has owned this plant for about 6 years, put it into bankruptcy, and now they are hiding from paying severance to these workers.”
“People really need to understand the flaws that we have in our system that we have in Canada, that somebody with the assets that Catalyst Capital have, can find a way to screw 40 workers, it’s an absolutely outrageous situation,” Dias said.
Dias says Glassman’s company is worth a billion dollars, and to them, this severance money is nickels and dimes.
Glassman needs to know “we’re not going to go away,” Dias said.
“They think that they can just screw 40 people and nobody will hear. We’re going to make sure that he gets the message that we’re not going away.”
