The damage could top $2 million dollars but no one was hurt following a blaze in North Dumfries Sunday evening.
The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which broke out at Cedar Creek Sawmill & Tree Farm on Edworthy Side Road, destroying 3 buildings including the sawmill.
North Dumfries Fire Chief Robert Shantz tells 570 News wind fanned the flames, and it was also a challenge to access this site, “We initially had two trucks on site, and (the site) did present a bit of a problem to get a set up, but eventually we got two more trucks in there from the South side of the exposure.”
The owners wife says the loss of the 15 year old business is huge.
Callers to the 570 newsroom on Sunday night said that the smoke from the fire, which started around 6:00, could be seen for kilometres.
One listener, Cindy sent in a photo of the smoke which was quite visible from a significant distance.
Then, yesterday afternoon just before 3, firefighters were called to a large barn fire 1347 Spragues Road and arrived to the building already engulfed in flames. Shantz says wind was again a factor, “Again it was another wind driven fire and it did turn into a very large wild fire.” Shantz says the wind makes is very difficult to fight flames when they have the ability to spread with little notice.
There is no damage estimate or cause just yet. No one was hurt.
