Curious about your past – your family history?

All this month, the Region of Waterloo is hosting various exhibits to help people learn a little more about their past as part of Archives Awareness Week.

Lesley Webb, an Archivist for the Region of Waterloo tells 570 News “Archives Awareness Week is the first full week in April, and it’s been designated by the provincial government as a week for local municiple and private collection archives to share with the community what they have to offer.”

In honour of Archives Awareness Week, the Region of Waterloo is hosting a couple of exhibits. “Uncover Your Family History” is being exhibited in the lobby of 150 Frederick Street in Kitchener, helping people learn what different types of records are available in the Archives for conducting genealogical research. The exhibit teaches you how to obtain birth, death, marriage and property information from old municipal records.

Webb adds, “Usually people have a strong interest in finding out where they come from, so we’re just trying to support using municipal records. But you can also go to a number of local libraries in the area and they have a strong family history collection as well and you may find that someone has already researched your family.”

Also offered at 150 Frederick Street on the second floor is The Archives of Ontario Celebrates Our Agricultural Past. Webb says “It’s a traveling exhibit that celebrates the farming way of life focusing on the settlement of the land, its use, and the people who have made agriculture one of the province’s greatest assets.”

“Uncover Your Family History” will be in the building until April 30th, while “The Archives of Ontario Celebrates Our Agricultural Past” will only be in town until the 27th.
