Most surgeries back on Wednesday

Most elective surgeries will be back on at Grand River Hospital on Wednesday. This after a sealed specimen container broke during disposal. The Hospital was worried that contaminant may have gone airborne in the lab, although it was contained to that area.

The Director of Communications at GRH Mark Karjaluoto tells 570News, that this was something they haven’t dealt with before, and had to consult with outside help, “We are working with outside help in terms of cleaning and decontaminating the lab and then preparing to return it to operation.”

Grand River has also been working with other hospitals in the area so that some of its services were kept available to people, “We’ve been very fortunate that St. Mary’s has been able to help with testing that would otherwise be accomplished here that’s allowed some of our services to continue,” said Karjaluoto.

Karjaluoto says that while they understand that people want the full range of services back at Grand River, they need to work correctly within the lab before it’s back up and running.
