More revisions to the improvement plans for Kitchener’s Boathouse at Victoria Park.
City council has accepted a recommendation from Councillor Yvonne Fernandes which city calls a ‘win-win’ design change.
The initial decision would have seen a walkway constructed between the edge of Victoria Park Lake and the patio at the rear of the Boathouse.
The patio would have only wrapped around the west side of the building.
Now, it will wrap around both the west and the east side of the building.
As well, decorative metal gates will be put in place that, when closed, will block the pathway between the Boathouse and the edge of the lake.
The closing times of the gates still need to be worked out between the city and the Boathouse.
The city is also exploring further options dealing with washroom facilities.
For now, temporary unisex public washrooms will be established at the Boathouse until permanent washrooms are build in the north end of the park or near the building.
Kitchener’s Executive Director of Economic Development, Rod Regier says “This discussion with the community brought to light opportunities to create a patio design that allows people to utilize the lakeshore path during periods of light patio use, and helps the Boathouse operator manage large crowds during the primary festival season.”
