Ontario Conservative leader Tim Hudak was in the region today.
He started the day touring the Cambridge campus of Conestoga College.
Speaking on 570’s Jeff Allan show says the province needs to invest in the skilled trades, an area he says has been neglected, “Let’s modernize our apprenticeship system. When you get jobs, electricians, plumbers, tradesmen like that, it gets you in the middle class. Good jobs. We need to do more of it and get out of the past, into the future.”
Hudak weighed in on Premier Dalton McGuinty’s plea to teachers to accept a wage freeze and changes to their sick leave plan, “I know that some teachers may not be happy about that, but listen, people in the private sector have had to cut back, people on fixed incomes are struggling just to pay the bills, and I think it’s only fair, when it comes to the public sector, including teachers, we need a pay freeze. And this whole gratuity business of banking sick days and getting paid off at the end, we can’t afford that.”
He says it’s time to get down to business, “I know here, in Kitchener-Waterloo recently, we had an issue about Jessie Sansone who was strip-searched and his kids were taken away temporarily, when his daughter drew a picture of her father holding a gun…you know let’s focus on teaching in the class room. This whole concept that teachers are co-parents…they’re teachers, we’re parents.”
