Residential rental bylaw?

A study is being launched to see if Kitchener needs to bring in a residential rental licensing bylaw.

Council has given that job to the city’s enforcement division.
The study will look at several areas including what types of buildings would be affected and whether there should be a cap placed on the number of bedrooms within a rental unit.

There is also the matter of drawing up a fee structure.
Mayor Carl Zehr says “This is not about whether we’re approving a rental license.”

He says “It’s about the principles of whether or not we move forward with the discussion.”

The study comes as the city deals with complaints from residents, including some who have aired concerns about single-detached housing that is rented to groups of people, in some cases eight or more to a house.
