More support for local childcare centres

The Waterloo Region Early Learning Coalition is standing behind local childcare centres in their fight to stop the local school boards from taking over before and after school daycare for 4-7 year olds.

CEO of the YMCAs of Cambridge and Kitchener-Waterloo, John Haddock, says that if the schools take over, some centres will be forced to close. He says out of 123 centres in the region, 28 believe they will be closed in three years and those who stay open say they’ll have to reduce the number of spaces.

“We wanted to broaden the issue and we wanted to get on the solution side of things for families in our region,” Haddock explains. “This is all about families. This isn’t about board of education and childcare providers.”

Haddock adds that they are currently providing extended daycare to more than half the elementary schools in the region. He says the changes being proposed would eliminate that.
